Hike to Maligathenna Temple

Today you commence your tour by driving you to the less known area in the country.

Arrive to Maligathenna and start your hike up to the summit of the temple.

The history of Maligathenna Raja Maha Vihara is believed to be goes back to the time period of Anuradhapura Kingdom. According to the folklore this temple is considered as one of place that King Valagamba used to hide during the Chola invasions in Anuradhapura.

The temple has been mainly divided into two grounds called Pahala Maluwa and Ihala Maluwa. In the pahala maluwa an image house, Bo tree, an ancient Devalaya and Stupa can be seen. On the top of the rock a rampart surrounded Bo tree and a Stupa has been built. There are number of rock caves with drip ledges are found in the vihara premises. In one of them an engraved stone door frame can be seen.

From the archaeological evidences, it is believed that this area was inhabited since pre-historic period. Caves with drip ledges prove that the temple may have been used during the periods of 2-3 century BC by the Sangha as their abodes. According to the legends connected with this temple, king Valagamba (89-77 BC) used to stay in this historical place from time to time during the invasion from South India. The Pilikuththuwa temple is considered as one of the Buddhist temples in the country with highest number of drip ledged rock caves. It is said that this temple has 99 rock caves with drip ledges, spreading about 200 acres of total area. As at today, 78 of caves have been identified.

Then leave to Gampaha and you will take the train from Gampaha to Polgahawela. This train ride will give you the chance of mixing with the local people and also you can admire the beauty of the nature beside the train track.

If you a bird lover, you can walk around the hotel early morning to see different type of birds in the hotel.

After breakfast, proceed to Dambulla.

Visit Dambulla cave temple. Here is a collection of rock cave temples dating back to the 1st Century B.C. Dambulla Rock is 152 meters in height with a colossal recumbent figure of the Buddha, 14 meters in length. The paintings on the ceilings of the caves and the many carvings depict great events in the life of the Buddha.

In the evening climb Pidurangala Rock.

Pidurangala is an enormous rock located a few kilometres north of Sigiriya. The two rocks have an interlinked history: whilst King Kasyapa was building Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the 5th century, he moved monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock. An ancient cave temple still houses objects from various vintages that reflect Buddhist, Hindu and western beliefs, and the stupa to the left of the temple entrance is believed to mark the spot where King Kasyapa was cremated. From the top, there are glorious vistas of the surrounding landscape and an amazing view of the majestic Sigiriya Rock.

Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Today, after breakfast Polonnaruwa is explored.

The island’s Medieval Capital (11th – 13th Centuries AD) which rose to fame after the decline of Anuradhapura.. The city was fortified with three concentric walls, beautified with parks and gardens and sanctified by many shrines. A unique Irrigation complex watered the city as well as the surrounding plains helping in agriculture which made the island “the Granary of the East” . The largest of the man made reservoirs, the huge Parakrama Samudra (the Sea of Parakrama), is larger in size than the Colombo Harbour. Polonnaruwa is home to two magnificent World Heritage Sites and numerous other sites of archaeological and historical interest , some of which depict the influence that Hinduism had on the Buddhist Civilisation during that period of history.

Afternoon is dedicated to visit the famous rock fortress Sigiriya.

A Royal Citadel for 20 years in the 5th Century AD – stark and forbidding, haunted by an epic story of murder and betrayal is attributed to King Kasyapa who found hiding here after killing his father more fruitful than meeting the wrath of the people who loved King Dhatusena much more before meeting his rival – Prince Mugalan who had fled to India seeking reinforcements for his Army. This unique Rock Fortress or “castle in the sky” – a massive monolith of red stone that rises 600ft above ground , derived the name “Lion Rock” as the entrance to the climb to the summit is reached between the paws of a lion .

After a good breakfast, heading to Matale.

Visit Matale Aluviharaya Temple.

Aluviharaya cave temple in Sri Lanka is a rock-cave temple close to Matale where Buddhist monks wrote the Tripitakas during King Walagamba’s rule. These Tripitakas originally had come down by mere word of mouth by being committed to memory by Buddhist monks of the time. There’s a charming series of Buddhist caves, religious paintings, and a stupa.

Visit the Matale spice garden. The spice garden is one of the best spots for spices on the island, and here you will be introduced to various spices and be shown how these spices are grown and processed much to your awe.

From the spice garden you will start your hike towards the inside of the village passing the rubber plantations, paddy fields. Then you will arrive to Sudu Ganga ( White River) and you will cross the suspension bridge. Towards the end of the hike, you will see the view of Knuckle’s range.

After the hike, leave to your hotel at Wattegama.

After a good breakfast, heading to the last ancient city of Sri Lanka, Kandy.

Arrive to Kandy. Literally known as the “City on the Hills” so named as it was protected by the nature – water , rocks and jungles. The last capital of the Sri Lankan kings before falling to the British in 1815AD which is a World Heritage Site.

Under take a city tour in Kandy starting from the centre of attraction – the golden roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.

After visiting the tooth relic temple, you will drive around the affluent Kandy lake admiring the serene and stunning landscape merged with the beauty of nature. Then walk into the local market.

In the evening watch a Cultural Performance by traditional Kandyan Dancers and Drummers including devotional “Fire Walking”

After breakfast visit Royal Botanical Gardens – one of the best of its kind in Asia with more than 5000 species of different varieties of flora which incidentally was the Headquarters of Lord Louise Mountbatten – the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during the 2nd World War,

Then leave to Maussawa.

Visit a Tea Factory and a Plantation to witness the manufacturing process of world famous “Ceylon Tea” and to taste a pure unblended cup of factory fresh tea before being sent to the Tea Auctions in Colombo leading to Export.

A short walk can be done in the tea plantations.

Arrive to Maussawa and you are free to walk around the hotel where you will experience the local life style of the villagers.

Morning free to explore more the area.

Then leave to Belihul Oya. On the way stop at a small “ KADE” and have a Pol Rotti and a cup of tea, like a real local.

You will start to hike up to Mini Adam’s Peak. The summit of the mountain has a great panoramic views.

Return to Ella and proceed to Kuda Oya.

Then visit Buduruwagala Buddhist temple. Buduruwagala is an ancient buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. The complex consists of seven statues and belongs to the Mahayana school of thought. The statues date back to the 10th century. The gigantic Buddha statue still bears traces of its original stuccoed robe and a long streak of orange suggests it was once brightly painted

After breakfast heading to south coast of the island.

Galle, the southern capital of Sri Lanka , 115km from the City of Colombo linked by the Galle Road is a port city, standing on one of the main sea routes in the southern part of the country encircling the Galle Harbour It has a unique charm among the many historic places in Sri Lanka. The Dutch built the 1st Protestant Church in Sri Lanka with in the Dutch Fortress famous with its many bastions surrounded by the ramparts which was later on declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
